Don't you love to have a friend to yourself, making you feel special and cherished, knowing that you are the most important person to them, and they won't be distracted by others? Don't you feel the value of this friend in times of trouble? I think you've noticed that just sharing your worries with this understanding and caring friend brings you comfort and relief.
Have you not seen His saying, "And it is He who has created you in stages? There is no god except Him, but how you forget! Have you not seen how Allah has created seven heavens in layers?" (Quran 23:12-17). Ibn Kathir said: "(All- Hearing of their words, All-Seeing of their deeds, as His Hearing and Sight are in relation to a single soul)."
I once asked my older brother: Do you have a quarter of an hour to talk to me about a problem? He replied: (I am all yours)! These words overwhelmed me, and I found comfort in them.
This is how we are... we love to have someone who understands us and shares our pains and hopes with us. Just their presence is a source of comfort for us. But what if they are able to solve our problems?! How much more at ease our hearts will be then.
On the other hand, you may feel lost when others compete with you for this friend. You fear that they might distract them from you. Anyone who has many siblings competing for the attention of one parent, or a sister who has a co-wife competing for the attention of one husband, or a student who has classmates competing for the attention of one teacher, knows this feeling. The parent, husband, or teacher is no longer yours or yours alone. You may be forgotten or forgotten in the crowd of others.
Similarly, in the sacred hadith: "O My servants, if the first of you and the last of you, and the human of you and the jinn of you, were to stand in one place and ask of Me, and I were to give to each one what he asks, it would not decrease what I have, any more than a needle decreases the sea when it is put into it." [Muslim].
So glory be to Him who is not distracted by a suppliant from another suppliant, nor by a distressed from another distressed. "Whether you whisper or speak out loud or hide by night and journey by day." [Surah Ar-Ra'd].
No one is lost to Him amidst the crowd.
Search yourself! Have you ever felt this way towards your Lord, the Most High?!
I do not ask about your intellectual convictions, for they refuse that and without a doubt... but a person may harbor in the depths of their feelings anxieties that cause them concern, and they do not know the source, one of which is this anxiety... that you are lost before Allah amidst the crowd!
Here is a comforting and reassuring truth: Allah, the Most High, is aware of you, close to you, knows your worries, hears your supplication, rejoices in your repentance, and manages your affairs... all this as if you were alone in this universe, with no human or jinn sharing it with you.
You will not be lost amidst the crowd... but you can imagine that you are calling upon Allah alone, and He is listening to you alone...
And the meanings of the names from the Beautiful Names of Allah are manifested in His Lordship over you as if you were alone... so His mercy, closeness, forgiveness, kindness, generosity, patience, forgiveness, response, love, guidance, mercy, compassion, provision, sufficiency, concealment, gentleness, and giving are all manifested in you as if you were alone in this universe... therefore, you will not be lost in the crowd.
Notice how Allah singled out the word (the caller) in His saying, "And when My servants ask you concerning Me. Indeed, I am near. I respond to the call of the caller when he calls upon Me." (Quran 2:186). For in this singling out, there is a sense of attention to your supplication that may not be present in the plural (the callers when they call upon Me). It is not a general, summary response to the group of callers such that His response to most of them would suffice for the response to each of them individually... but He responds to your call as if you were alone, even if the Almighty is called upon by you at the same moment by billions, nay, countless numbers of humans, jinn, and angels.
Similarly, His saying, "Is He who responds to the distressed when he calls upon Him?" (Quran 27:62). Each distressed one individually as if he were alone. "And your Lord does not forget." (Quran 19:64). Glory be to Him, for this is His affair: "And not an atom's weight in the earth or in the heaven escapes your Lord, nor what is smaller than that or greater, but that it is in a clear record." (Quran 10:61).
So call upon Allah, hope in Him, find comfort in Him, and contemplate in yourself the meanings of His names and attributes, and bring to mind His provision as if you were alone...
And always remember: You will not be lost amidst the crowd.
