Did Ibn Sallul Insult the Messenger of Allah and Yet He Forgave Him?
1. The Prophet (peace be upon him) was kind, forgiving, and patient, but he was also noble, generous, and dignified. It is important to be cautious when discussing "forgiveness" in a way that makes the listener think that our religion is one of humiliation and degradation, far be it from Allah. 2. They said that Ibn Sallul said during the Battle of Bani Al-Mustaliq (What is the difference between us and them except what the speaker said: "Feed your dog, it will eat you"), and he meant the Prophet (peace be upon him), yet the Prophet forgave him. 3. First, this narration is weak and does not establish the truth. Even if it were established, Ibn Sallul was speaking about those he called (the cloaks of Quraysh), meaning the emigrants, and he did not mention the name of the Prophet (peace be upon him). 4. What is established is that he said: (Let the most noble of them come out), and even this did not mention the name of the Prophet, and we have clarified that the Prophet did not remain silent about this but sent to Ibn Sallul asking him, and he swore oath after oath that he did not say it. Imagine Ibn Sallul in humiliation swearing to the Prophet. 5. In public, Ibn Sallul showed respect for the Prophet (peace be upon him). Indeed, in the hadith narrated by Ibn Hazm in Al-Muhalla and authenticated by him from Akram, the freed slave of Ibn Abbas, it is said that Quraysh said (on the day of Al-Hudaybiyyah): (O Abu Hubab (this is the kunya of Ibn Sallul) We have prevented Muhammad from circumambulating this house, but we allow you) so he said: (No, I have a good example in the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)!) (Ibn Hazm said: Authentic from the narration of the trustworthy) 6. Similarly, in a similar incident when one of the hypocrites said something bad about the emigrants (without mentioning the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) but implying him), Ibn Umar said: I saw him clinging to the halter of the Prophet's camel while the stones were stoning him, and he was saying: O Messenger of Allah, we were only joking and playing, and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: (Were you mocking Allah, His signs, and His Messenger?) 7. Thus were the hypocrites, humiliated, apologizing, and swearing. Do not imagine that they were insulting the Prophet openly, leaning back laughing, then the Prophet (peace be upon him) forgave them! 16. We conclude with a great statement by Ibn Taymiyyah in (Al-Sarm Al-Maslul on the Insulter of the Messenger): (For the single word of insulting the Prophet (peace be upon him) is not tolerated by the Islam of thousands of disbelievers. And because the manifestation of the religion of Allah prevents anyone from speaking in it with a criticism more beloved to Allah and His Messenger than that people enter it while it is violated and despised) meaning that the honor of Islam is raised so that no one dares to criticize the Prophet, which is more beloved to Allah and His Messenger than that many people enter it while His sanctities are violated and the disbelievers insult His Prophet (peace be upon him). 17. So distinguish, may Allah have mercy on you, between the tolerance of Islam and humiliation! (And to Allah belongs the honor and to His Messenger and to the believers, but the hypocrites do not know). Note: There is no need to bring up the permissibility or impermissibility of revenge that occurred in our issue and in every context where we mention the greatness of the Prophet (peace be upon him)! I am here talking about a spirit of humiliation and degradation that is spread among the Muslims with false arguments.
