Episode 3

Peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah. Dear brothers, in the previous episode, we mentioned that one of us may feel secure from hypocrisy and think that the verses speaking about hypocrites do not address him because he did not realize that hypocrisy has degrees, and a person may combine hypocrisy and faith. We mentioned evidence for this in Allah's saying: ((They are closer to disbelief that day than to faith)) and the scholars' interpretation of it. Today, we want to mention another place, which is Allah's saying in Surah Al-Baqarah describing the hypocrites: ((Their example is like the one who kindled a fire, but when it illuminated what was around him, Allah took away their light and left them in darkness, they cannot see (17) Deaf, dumb, blind, so they do not return (18) Or like a heavy rain from the sky in which there is darkness, thunder, and lightning, they put their fingers in their ears from the thunder, fearing death, and Allah is surrounding the disbelievers (19) The lightning almost snatches their sight, whenever it shines for them, they walk in it, and when it darkens over them, they stand up)) Ibn Kathir said in its interpretation, explaining the divisions of hypocrites: (They are two types: pure, and they are those who are given the fiery example, and hypocrites who waver, sometimes appearing to them the light of faith and sometimes it dims, and they are the owners of the watery example, and they are lighter in condition than those before them) End. The fiery example is Allah's saying ((Their example is like the one who kindled a fire)) and the watery example ((Or like a heavy rain from the sky)). And by His saying: sometimes it appears to them the light of faith, it is Allah's saying ((Whenever it shines for them, they walk in it))...as if faith shines in their hearts from time to time, so they walk in the path to Allah, but the light of faith does not delay to dim, so they stop. Examine yourself...is there in your heart doubt about some of the laws of Islam and aversion to some of its rituals? Then whenever the enemies of Islam inflict new injustice on the nation, you feel that you are targeted and the distinction between truth and falsehood becomes clearer to you, so your faith strengthens and your love for Allah and His Messenger increases, and you become envious of the religion...but you do not delay, and you return to what you were in terms of lack of conviction in some of the rulings of Allah or aversion to them! If this is the case, we must not feel secure from these verses... Thus, it is understood from this verse that a single person may fluctuate between faith and hypocrisy: Just as faith increases and decreases, so does hypocrisy. Another evidence of this fluctuation is Allah's saying: ((Wavering between that, neither to these nor to these)) Ibn Kathir said in its interpretation: (And among them is the one who is afflicted with doubt, sometimes inclining to these and sometimes inclining to those) End. A weak believer may incline to the believers if he sees a victory for them in one of the rounds of struggle with their enemies. But if the scale of the enemies of Islam tips again, he returns to doubt and hesitation because he measures things by their appearances and forgets that the world is a place of work, not a place of reward. Therefore, let each of us account himself: does hypocrisy tarnish his faith, and does he fluctuate in his conditions between faith and hypocrisy according to circumstances? And let him treat the diseases of his heart before it is too late. Peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah.
