Episode 5
Peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah. Brothers and sisters, in the previous episodes, we discussed the first four commandments of our Lord, the Almighty, in Surah Al-An'am, when He said: ((Say, 'Come, I will recite to you what your Lord has forbidden you: Do not associate anything with Him, and do good to your parents, and do not kill your children out of poverty—We provide for you and them—and do not commit abominations, whether open or secret.')). In the previous episode, we talked about the importance of guarding the inner self. Today, we are meeting the fifth commandment. Allah, the Almighty, said: ((And do not kill the soul which Allah has forbidden, except by right)). Killing the soul which Allah has forbidden includes the Muslim and the non-Muslim who is under protection or in a treaty, not a combatant.
What a terrible crime! Killing the soul that Allah has honored and created to worship Him. Killing is an aggression against the right of Allah who created this human soul to worship Him, yet the killer ends the life of this soul without paying attention to what it was created for. What a terrible crime to deprive children of their father's embrace and tender kisses, to deprive a woman of her husband and his care, to deprive a mother of her child and his service and kindness. When you are blessed with a new child and your little daughter goes to visit her mother in the hospital... and you are on your way back with your daughter, your daughter will ask you innocently: (Daddy, where is Mama?) You will feel pain at that moment because your child will spend that night away from her mother. Imagine then the children in the afflicted Muslim lands who are deprived of their fathers or mothers in an instant by the hands of aggressors, and this deprivation will not be for one night, but for life. ((And do not kill the soul which Allah has forbidden, except by right))... So there are specific cases where killing is a right and brings life to society... ((And for you in retaliation is life, O people of understanding, that you may fear)).
Brother, sister, you may think you are far from this crime, the crime of killing. But the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, warned of forms of aggression that are as bad as the crime of killing, as he said in the hadith narrated by Al-Bukhari: ((Cursing a believer is like killing him, and whoever accuses a believer of disbelief, it is like killing him)). Therefore, do not take it lightly to curse a believer, for cursing is banishing from the mercy of Allah. Whoever curses a believer is as if he has stripped him of the mercy of Allah that he lives for. And do not take it lightly to accuse a believer of disbelief. Allah, the Almighty, described the disbelievers as dead. He said: ((Or who was dead and We gave him life)), and this one who was a disbeliever but Allah guided him to faith. Whoever accuses a believer of disbelief is as if he killed him. Therefore, avoid everything that our religion describes as akin to killing, so that you do not violate the commandment of our Lord, the Almighty, when He said: ((And do not kill the soul which Allah has forbidden, except by right)). Peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah.
