Episode 8 - They obeyed Allah while drunk!
My brothers, lovers of the Quran. We mentioned in the previous episode that we are commanded to obey Allah in a state of anger, and we mentioned the story of Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, with Ayina bin Hisn. The power of faith made the Companions respond to Allah's command even in a state that may be harder than anger... in a state of intoxication! Anas bin Malik, may Allah be pleased with him, describes a scene before the prohibition of alcohol, saying: (While I was passing the cup to Abu Talhah, Abu Ubaydah bin al-Jarrah, Muadh bin Jabal, Suhayl bin Bayda, and Abu Dujana until their heads swayed) meaning the alcohol had its effect on them. He said: (Then we heard a caller calling: 'Behold, alcohol has been prohibited.') Look now at the divine command when faith is mixed with it, even when it is submerged under layers of the effect of alcohol. Anas said: (So we poured out the drink), imagine their scene as they immediately turned the cups over to get rid of what was in them), he said: and we broke the jars (containers of alcohol)... they broke them, as if it were a loud declaration that we will break our attachment to alcohol forever. He said: (And some of us performed ablution, some of us took a bath, and we took some of the perfume of Umm Sulaym, then we went out to the mosque) and found the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, reciting His words: ((O you who have believed, indeed the alcohol, gambling, idols, and divining arrows are but defilement from the work of Satan, so avoid them that you may be successful. Satan only wants to cause between you animosity and hatred through alcohol and gambling and to avert you from the remembrance of Allah and prayer. Then will you be restrained?)) (And the narration is reported by al-Bazzar and his narrators are trustworthy). In America, a prohibition on alcohol was imposed in 1920, which led to revolts and the imprisonment of half a million people who did not comply with the decision, and two hundred people opposing the decision were killed during the suppression of their revolts, then Congress was forced to repeal the decision and allow alcohol again in 1933! My brother the smoker... which is easier? The Companions leaving alcohol or you leaving smoke? The answer depends on faith. Scientifically speaking, alcohol and smoke are addictive substances, and quitting them leads to what is known as the (withdrawal syndrome). That is, a group of annoying symptoms resulting from quitting the substance. And we teach students that the (withdrawal syndrome) for alcohol is more severe than that for nicotine. In fact, sudden quitting of alcohol can sometimes be fatal. You will say to me: alcohol was prohibited gradually. True, but even so, their bodies were still used to it, and it is likely that the Companions suffered when they left alcohol. But look, my brother, how Allah compensated them with better than it in their minds and souls, for the hadith we mentioned contains the names of great Companions (Abu Ubaydah, Muadh bin Jabal, Abu Dujana, all of them) who immediately left alcohol for the sake of Allah, so Allah chose them for knowledge, jihad, and martyrdom... and whoever leaves something for Allah, Allah will compensate him with better than it. O you who have become accustomed to a habit that Allah does not love, remember Allah's call ((Then will you be restrained?)), and respond as the Companions responded, so that Allah may choose you to defend His religion as He chose them. And peace be upon you.
