The day of (Mawlid) is great and the day of (Prophethood) is greater because Prophethood is the descent of Allah's words, so the Prophet's honor is through his prophethood. If the Prophet didn't celebrate his prophethood, then it's more appropriate that his nation not celebrate his birth. Umar ibn al-Khattab dated the calendar with the Hijrah and did not date it with the Prophet's birth as the People of the Book did, because people are praised for their work if they chose it, not for a predestined event they didn't choose (Abdul Aziz al-Tarifi).
