The day of (Mawlid/Birth) is great and the day of (Prophethood) is greater because the Prophethood is the revelation of Allah's word, so the Prophet's honor is in his prophethood. If the Prophet did not celebrate his prophethood, then it is more appropriate that his Ummah not celebrate his birth. Umar ibn al-Khattab dated history with the Hijra and did not date it with the birth of the Prophet, peace be upon him, as the People of the Book did, because people are praised for their actions if they chose them, not for predestined actions they did not choose (Abdul Aziz al-Tarifi).
