We fast on Ashura as an expression of our reverence for God’s right—at a time when many see no value in rituals unless they yield clear economic or social benefits. As if the mere fact that God loves these rituals is not enough to inspire their veneration.
We fast on Ashura because God has exalted it. We fast to affirm that His pleasure is central to our lives, even if no immediate worldly benefit becomes evident. And how could it not be, when its rewards are immense?
This reflects the meaning of God’s words in the sacred hadith:
“Every deed of the son of Adam is for him, except fasting. It is for Me, and I will reward it.”
Fasting is an act of worship in which the essence of sincerity and devotion to God alone is most clearly manifest.
