We fast on Ashura to attain Allah’s nearness in this time, and nearness is that Allah is with you—this nearness that makes you recognize the truth and steadies you upon it.
Often we complain that we have strayed and become confused, no longer knowing where the truth lies, while desires and doubts have taken hold of us. Here fasting becomes the main means of increasing God-consciousness, as He the Exalted has said:
O you who believe, fasting has been prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, so that you may become God-conscious. (2:183)
God-consciousness is the path that leads to Allah’s nearness, as He has said in His decisive revelation:
Know that Allah is with those who are God-conscious. (2:186)
Moreover, God-consciousness is the reason Allah makes for you a “criterion” by which you can distinguish right from wrong, as He has said:
O you who believe, if you are God-conscious of Allah, He will grant you a criterion. (8:29)
