Is it conceivable that I would waste my eternal destiny for a fleeting compliment? I ask God to forgive us all. The subject is truly terrifying when you consider for even a moment that a single word could determine your fate; and this in itself is a calamity.
Before you reach the point of uttering that word, you must have taken a hundred thousand steps to avoid this path. This is no joke; it is a terrifying truth. Imagine, for example, a person who has spent their life doing good and working for others, like a doctor serving people and doing righteous deeds, only for a friend they have known for years to crack a "joke" or make a light-hearted remark about religion. Over time, all that good work evaporates because of this companionship.
O people of goodness, this matter is no laughing matter, so I swear by God that you must be extremely selective in choosing your companions. The issue of companionship must be a red line in your life.
When I am in a gathering and I sense that these people might joke about religious matters or disrespect sacred things, I immediately get up and end the session. Why would I waste my destiny and destroy my Hereafter for the sake of pleasing someone?
God the Almighty has warned us about this late regret in His Noble Book, where He says: "And the Day the wrongdoer will bite on his hands [in regret] saying, 'Oh, I wish I had taken with the Messenger a way. Oh, woe to me! I wish I had not taken so-and-so as a close friend. He led me away from the remembrance after it had come to me. And ever is Satan, to man, a deserter.'" (Quran 25:27-29)
