Did you know that the Children of Israel used to ransom their captives, yet God did not praise them for it?
The Children of Israel fought one another alongside their pagan allies. When a Jew was captured, they quickly paid ransom to free him, in accordance with some teachings from the Torah—despite having violated its core principle by fighting their own brethren.
So God revealed this verse concerning them:
"Do you believe in part of the Book and disbelieve in part? Then what is the recompense for those among you who do that except disgrace in the life of this world, and on the Day of Resurrection they will be sent back to the severest punishment? And God is not unaware of what you do." (Quran 2:85)
God did not say to them, "You did well in ransoming the captives, even though you sinned by aiding the pagans against them." Instead, He warned them of disgrace in this world and severe punishment in the Hereafter, because they divided the laws of the religion—following what suited their desires and abandoning what opposed them.
If such a severe warning was given to those who fought their own brother and then ransomed him, what then awaits those who aid the disbelievers in capturing Muslims, yet do not ransom them? Worse still, they prevent and punish those who strive to free them?
What disgrace awaits such people in this world? And what severe punishment awaits them in the Hereafter?
We ask God for safety, that He does not envelop us in His punishment, and that He helps us support the captives.
Peace be upon you, and God’s mercy and blessings.
