I repented... I grieved!

Some young people, after repenting from a sin, experience distress, sadness, or emptiness, and think to themselves, “It’s strange that I left the forbidden, yet I don’t feel relief immediately. Maybe my repentance didn’t work!”
No, leaving sin does not mean its effects will vanish overnight. In the story of our companion, after months of repentance, he fell into deep sorrow. People began to distance themselves from him, even at work they could no longer tolerate interacting with him, yet despite all this, he did not retreat from his repentance.
Here is the lesson, my brothers and sisters: do not let the difficulty of the beginning deter you from repentance.
What you may experience could be due to:
The most important thing is not to “test” Allah. Do not say, “I’ll try repenting for a week or a month; if I feel at ease, I’ll continue, otherwise I’ll go back to what I was doing.” There is no trial with Allah.
When you migrate to Allah, cross the sea, and reach the shore, burn the old ships—there is no return, no looking back. Even if you face hardships, Allah is testing you, putting you to the test, and purifying you of your sins through these difficulties.
Yes, you may tire at first, but the fatigue of leaving captivity is far lighter than the comfort of remaining in prison.
Remember the words of Allah the Exalted:
And among the people is he who worships Allah on the edge. If good befalls him, he is satisfied therewith; but if a trial afflicts him, he turns back on his face. He loses both this world and the Hereafter. That is the manifest loss. (Quran 22:11)
What does this mean? Some people remain in a circle of sin and say, “Let me try repentance.” They enter one foot into the circle of repentance. If good comes to them after attempting repentance, they feel assured and say, “By Allah, I saw good come from repentance, so I will fully enter into obedience to Allah.”
But if a trial afflicts them or problems arise, this man turns back on his face. What is his state, O Lord? Allah says:
He loses both this world and the Hereafter. That is the manifest loss. (Quran 22:11)
There is no trial with Allah.
