If a person—God forbid—presumes to insult the Lord of all creation, will God not accept his repentance if he truly repents? Of course, whoever repents sincerely, God will accept his repentance. But before a person commits this grave sin, and before a woman who considers herself his wife says, “By God, he is my husband when he gets angry—he insults the faith, but then seeks forgiveness, performs ghusl, and prays,” before all such talk, let us ask this question:
Does this person, who blasphemes the Lord for the most trivial reasons—whether because his shirt isn’t ironed, because he argued with his wife, because his food is cold, or because of a work problem—does he ever truly honor God? Has he ever truly revered Allah the Exalted? Or is his heart filled with filth that spews out with the slightest pressure?
What we witness in such situations reveals what lies in the heart: not reverence, but—God forbid—hatred and enmity toward Allah the Exalted. So when does true repentance appear? It is not that a person blasphemes, then repents, then blasphemes again, then repents again, “on the rise and fall.”
True repentance is when a person feels genuine remorse, seeks forgiveness, and turns back to God, performing ghusl, praying, and increasing in good deeds. Then, when the same anger-inducing situation arises that previously led him to blaspheme, he restrains his tongue and says: “I seek refuge in Allah. May Allah cut off my tongue before such a word comes out. May Allah paralyze my limbs before such a word escapes me. By Allah, I would rather die and burn than let such a word pass my lips.”
This is the one who hates returning to disbelief as much as he hates being cast into the Fire. This is the one who has truly repented and now understands the majesty and grandeur of Allah the Exalted.
As for the person who repeatedly commits this act, we do not merely say to him, “Repent.” Rather, we say, “Come, enter into Islam.” It is clear that you do not know Islam, do not understand the meaning of “Allah,” do not grasp the meaning of revering Allah, nor the value of this world compared to the Hereafter.
Your problem is greater than mere repentance. Your problem is that you do not truly know the reality of Islam. This behavior is described in the verse:
And leave those who take their religion as a game and pastime, and whom the life of this world has deluded. (Quran 6:70)
He thinks the matter is a game.
But if someone sitting with us now trembles at these words and says, “Enough! I repent. By Allah, I will never do it again. May my tongue be cut off before such a word escapes me,” will Allah accept his repentance? Yes, Allah will accept it. Allah the Almighty says:
Say, “O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, He is the Forgiving, the Merciful.” (Quran 39:53)
This includes even such a grave sin. The door of repentance remains open until death. And this is a glad tiding from Allah to all who hear us: a call to hasten. So what are you waiting for? The door is open—God willing.
