Contradiction Between Appearances and Workers' Rights
You may build a mosque with your wealth while your employees' homes crumble under poverty, debt, and the hardships created by financial strain. Some employers pay their workers wages that barely cover their basic needs, yet they themselves are ready to spend hundreds of thousands on building and decorating a mosque.
Dear employer, beware of being a capitalist without realizing it. In capitalism, people are seen merely as labor hands—if we find cheaper labor, we take it; if a machine can replace them, we do. It’s all about supply and demand, and if someone doesn’t like it, there are others who will. Farewell to those who refuse to comply.
The Islamic Vision of Work and Wealth
When you think as a Muslim, you understand that there is a systematic campaign of impoverishment aimed at subjugating nations and starving them to make it easier to strip them of their religion and morality. You realize that saving souls from poverty is a way to save them from disbelief. Ensuring your employees' livelihood is a form of supporting the faith and combating the enemies of the faith. You draw closer to God by providing for families, preserving family cohesion, upholding the dignity of fathers before their households, their spouses, and their children, maintaining their stability, and enabling the youth to afford marriage in the face of a flood of desires.
In all of this, you remember that you are a trustee of this wealth, as God the Almighty says:
"Believe in Allah and His Messenger and spend out of that whereof He has made you trustees. And such of you as believe and spend (in Allah's way), theirs will be a great reward." (Quran 57:7)
Responsibility of Owners of Educational and Training Institutions
You may find a school owner who curses the enemies of the nation, yet pays teachers salaries that are insufficient, leaving them with neither mental clarity nor the strength to fulfill their mission. Then he expects them to stand as a barrier against the enemies' conspiracies targeting the minds of the youth!
When you think as a Muslim, you would be ashamed to pay an employee a wage that runs out by mid-month, forcing them to beg from others, when you are capable of increasing it. This is while you recite the words of Allah the Almighty:
"And do not withhold from people their due." (Quran 11:85)
Blessings in Kindness to Employees
Dear owner of wealth, what if God tests you through your children, for whom you amass wealth, or through your health, leaving you unable to enjoy it? Perhaps the supplication of an employee whose dignity you preserved will ward off a trial you do not even know about.
I know someone very dear to me who does not care how much others pay their employees in his line of business. What matters to him is that their needs are met—he ensures his employees' needs are fulfilled and makes them feel valued. By the grace of Allah, his business flourishes with blessings, while many other businesses lose out.
I know the situation is difficult even for many business owners, but some still have the means to honor their employees. Remember: "The merciful will be shown mercy by the Most Merciful. Show mercy to those on earth, and the One above the heavens will show mercy to you." (Hadith narrated by al-Tirmidhi and others). In the Hadith Qudsi narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim, Allah the Almighty says: "O son of Adam, spend, and I will spend on you."
If only some of our brothers in business would commit to this after hearing these words, drawing closer to Allah by providing for their employees and setting an example for others. Peace be upon you.
