Peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah and His blessings.

Brothers, some people wonder: Why do Muslims face these trials? Why do things happen in Syria, Iraq, and elsewhere? Where is the happiness that Islam brings to its followers?

There are truths, brothers, that we avoid confronting because we find them heavy, but avoiding them does not help you. Instead, it throws you into confusion and distress, as happened to those who asked this question. We must confront the truth, accept it, and embrace it. Then, you will find tranquility afterward, by the will of Allah.

The World is a Place of Trial, Not Reward

The truth we avoid is that this world is a place of trial, not a place of reward, and that the covenant of Islam we have made does not promise that we will not be tested, but rather the opposite.

We have ingrained in our minds that Islam and piety mean fulfilling your worldly desires. Our educational system at home, in school, and in the Friday sermon is generally characterized by a lack of sincerity and seriousness in dealing with religious matters, by focusing on achieving "behavior" rather than instilling "values," and by rushing to reap the fruits while avoiding work for the Hereafter.

All of this is a result of weak certainty. This is how they think, and this is how they teach you to think: "Pray so that you succeed in your studies," "Give charity so that evil is kept away from you," "Avoid the forbidden so that Allah blesses you in your life." There are phrases we see as having little impact, such as "so that Allah is pleased with you" or "so that you enter Paradise." Therefore, we support them with worldly incentives or make their outcome worldly, such as saying, "May Allah be pleased with you and bless you in your work or studies." However, these worldly incentives are not an essential part of our covenant with Allah the Almighty.

The Nature of the Deal with Allah: "And for You is Paradise"

Does this mean that what we have learned about our religion was wrong? Yes, it was wrong in the way it was presented. Look at the Second Pledge of Aqaba. How did the Companions of the Prophet (peace be upon him) pledge allegiance to him? They pledged to obey him in ease and hardship, to spend in ease and hardship, to enjoin good and forbid evil, and to say for the sake of Allah without being blamed by critics, and to support the Prophet (peace be upon him) if he came to Yathrib and defend him from what they defend themselves, their wives, and their children from.

And what is the reward? He said to them: "And for you is Paradise." He took everything from them in exchange for Paradise. The Companions understood the meaning of this deal, so As'ad bin Zurarah (may Allah be pleased with him) said after the Messenger of Allah mentioned these conditions: "Slow down, O people of Yathrib. We did not ride our camels to him except knowing that he is the Messenger of Allah, and that his expulsion today is a challenge to all the Arabs, the killing of your best, and the swords will be drawn against you. Either you are a people who endure that and take him, and your reward is with Allah, or you are a people who fear for yourselves and leave him, so clarify that, for it is more excusable to Allah."
