We fast on the Day of Ashura so that we do not regret on the Day of Judgment. For, my brothers and sisters, apart from the matter of forgiveness of sins, there is a difference in the rewards and the levels of Paradise. Our Lord, the Almighty, named the Day of Judgment as "the Day of Mutual Loss" (Yawm al-Taghābun), meaning that everyone will realize they were at a loss.
The one who is at a loss is he who gave much but received little. Even the righteous believer will realize he was at a loss. For the Almighty Allah granted him this life and this lifespan, which could have been used to attain a higher rank in Paradise through good deeds. However, he spent his life in exchange for fewer rewards than he could have earned, and thus he is at a loss. Therefore, hasten to perform good deeds so that you may avoid regret on the Day of Mutual Loss.
We fast on the Day of Ashura to expiate for old sins we committed and have forgotten. We may have abandoned some sins, thinking that merely abandoning them was sufficient, and did not seek Allah’s forgiveness for them as we should have. This stems from a lack of reverence for Allah’s right.
Allah the Almighty says: On the Day when Allah will resurrect them all and inform them of what they did. Allah had kept count of it, while they forgot it. And Allah, over all things, is Witness. (Quran 58:6)
It is from Allah’s mercy upon the servant that He may purify him from these sins through grief, sorrow, and calamities that befall him. So you, too, hasten to purify yourself from them by fasting on great days such as the Day of Ashura.
