The Blood of Muslims in the Contemporary Reality
Peace be upon you and the mercy of God and His blessings.
May God bless you, my brothers. We live in an era where we see the blood of Muslims being shed everywhere; we see it in Syria, in Burma, in Egypt, and in other Muslim lands. We have become accustomed to seeing these scenes that hearts have almost become hardened, and some people see the taking of the lives of a number of Muslims as something that can be overlooked for the sake of returning life to normal or stabilizing the political situation.
This disconnect in feelings, this coldness towards the issues of Muslims, is the result of a great flaw in our perception of the value of the Muslim. Some have been influenced by materialistic theories that make man merely a number or a means to achieve political goals, while Islam has come to elevate the status of the human soul, especially that of the believer.
The Value of a Muslim's Blood in the Sharia
If you want to know the value of the Muslim, look at his status in Islamic law. The Sharia came to preserve the five necessities, at the top of which is the preservation of life. The Prophet (peace be upon him) held the sanctity of blood in the highest esteem; in the Prophet's biography, we find firm stances against any attack on Muslims.
Remember the story of Usama bin Zayd (may God be pleased with him), when he killed a man who said "There is no god but Allah" in battle, the Prophet (peace be upon him) became very angry and said to him: "Did you kill him after he said 'There is no god but Allah?'" He kept repeating it until Usama wished he had not become Muslim that day because of the greatness of the sin.
Similarly, in Islamic history, entire armies were mobilized for the dignity of a Muslim man or woman; as did Al-Mu'tasim when a woman sought his help, and as Al-Hajib Al-Mansur did in Al-Andalus. The Muslim state would rise and not sit idle if the blood of a single Muslim was spilled, because they understood that the dignity of the nation is from the dignity of the blood of its children.
The Severe Warning Against Killing the Believer
We must always remind ourselves of what Allah the Almighty said in His noble Book and what His Messenger (peace be upon him) said about the sanctity of blood. Allah the Exalted says in Surah An-Nisa:
{And whoever kills a believer intentionally, his recompense is Hell, to abide therein, and the wrath of Allah is upon him, and He has cursed him and prepared for him a great torment.} (Quran 4:93)
This severe warning - eternal Hell, the wrath of Allah, the curse, and the great torment - has not been gathered for any sin as it has been gathered for killing the believing soul without right. And Imam Muslim reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) warned against pointing a weapon at the Muslim brother, so how about killing him? The passing of this world is lighter with Allah than killing a Muslim man.
Our Duty Towards the Issues of Muslims
Oh my brothers, we must feel the pain of our brothers and not become accustomed to seeing their blood shed. Allah the Exalted is not heedless of what the wrongdoers do, He says: {And do not think Allah is unaware of what the wrongdoers do. He only delays them for a Day when the eyes will stare in horror.} (Quran 14:42)
We must know that we will stand before Allah the Exalted, and He will ask us about this blood. Let us examine ourselves, and let us honor what Allah has honored, and let us be one hand with our Muslim brothers everywhere. We ask Allah to spare the blood of Muslims and to lift the affliction from this nation.
Peace be upon you and the mercy of God and His blessings.
