Exempt Categories for Diabetic Patients from Fasting
According to the treatment guidelines, which we link in the description, those who have any of the following characteristics should not fast, as fasting poses a risk to them.
- Those with a fasting blood sugar level above 300 mg/dL, or a glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) level above 10%.
- Those who have experienced severe hypoglycemia, diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), or hyperglycemic hyperosmolar state (HHS) in the past three months.
- Those who frequently experience hypoglycemic episodes or those who do not exhibit symptoms of hypoglycemia (loss of sensation of hypoglycemia).
Comorbid Conditions and Special Circumstances
- Those who have recently suffered from a severe illness such as strokes.
- Those who engage in strenuous physical work (among diabetic patients).
- Pregnant diabetic patients.
- Diabetic patients with kidney failure undergoing dialysis.
- Those suffering from dementia or cognitive decline.
All the above-mentioned categories are at a real risk to their health from fasting, and they should consult a specialist doctor to follow the appropriate medical guidelines for their condition.
