Some people think freedom means doing whatever I want, watching whatever I want, opening whatever I want, and living without restrictions. However, our repentant friend from pornography discovered that this was not freedom at all. He said, "I realized I was enslaved by pornography, social media, and the opinions of people like me. Worse still, I thought I was the one making decisions and that I had a personality and ideas."
Here is the lesson for all of you: True freedom is not the ability to open the door to sin whenever you wish. True freedom is when sin no longer has the power to drag you whenever it pleases.
A person may claim to be free while actually being enslaved—enslaved to desire, to a screen, to a habit, or to people’s opinions. There is no true freedom except through servitude to Allah, which sets your compass straight and clear, aligning it with the pleasure of Allah the Exalted.
When our friend began to break free from the slavery of pornography and social media, he said something profound: "By the One besides whom there is no god, from this moment on, I started to truly live!"
This is where we understand the meaning of Allah the Exalted’s words:
Is he who was dead, then We gave him life and set for him a light by which he walks among the people, like one who is in darkness, never to emerge from it?
A person may appear alive and free on the outside, yet inside, he is a prisoner—driven by desire, pulled by screens, and with his will shattered. If you truly want to taste life, then step out of the slavery of whims and desires into the freedom of servitude to Allah.
