Abu al-Hasan al-Nadwi described this righteous Quranic generation, saying: "And the great knot—the knot of polytheism and disbelief—was untied, so all the knots were untied. The Messenger, peace be upon him, fought them with his first struggle, so he did not need to renew his struggle for every command and prohibition. Islam triumphed over ignorance in the first battle, so victory became his ally in every battle."
They entered into peace completely with their hearts, limbs, and souls. They did not oppose the Messenger after the guidance became clear to them, nor did they find any difficulty in what he decreed. They had no choice but to obey when he commanded or prohibited.
The Messenger informed them about the secrets of their souls and about the vessels of wine, so it flowed through the streets of the city until the share of Satan was removed from their souls, until their very souls were removed from them. They were just to themselves as they were to others.
They became in this world the people of the Hereafter, and on the Day the people of tomorrow. No calamity frightened them, nor did any blessing make them arrogant. Poverty did not preoccupy them, nor did wealth overwhelm them. Trade did not distract them, nor did power make them arrogant. They did not seek to cause corruption or elevate themselves on earth.
When they became like this, they conquered the corners of the earth and became a community for humanity, a protection for the world, and callers to the religion of God. The Messenger, peace be upon him, appointed them as his successors in his work, and he joined the High Companion, content with his nation and his message.
The speech of Abu al-Hasan al-Nadwi ends from his valuable book: "What Has the World Lost by the Decline of the Muslims."
