Episode 10 - My Word Won't Fall to the Ground!
Renewing the Heart with the Quran
Renew your heart with the Quran so that the soul may find tranquility in faith, and recite it at all times. Peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah.
Dear brothers, in the previous episodes, we saw the immediate response of the Companions to the command of Allah the Almighty, similar to pressing a button. Some may think that this is difficult and that it requires a period of time to get used to obeying or getting rid of a sin. In reality, my brothers, what may actually need time is building faith in the hearts. If faith is established in the heart, then the obedience that appears on the limbs is quick, as quick as a soldier's response to a command in the battlefield.
The obedience we see is the fruit of deep roots in the soul. What may take time is the growth of these roots, faith. The Companions' response with such speed was only because their faith was deeply rooted in their hearts, as deep as the roots in the earth. If you want an immediate response from yourself or those you call to obey Allah, then take care of the roots, take care of establishing faith.
The Story of Ma'qil ibn Yasar, may Allah be pleased with him
Today, we have another example of the fruits of deep faith in the souls. Al-Bukhari narrated that Ma'qil ibn Yasar, may Allah be pleased with him, married his sister to a man, who then divorced her. When her waiting period ended, the man came to propose to her again.
I want you to imagine with me the feelings of Ma'qil ibn Yasar: he married his sister to the man, invited people to the wedding, received congratulations, and then his sister was divorced! What was Ma'qil's reaction? He said to the man, "You married her and I prepared her for you as a bride, and you honored her, then you divorced her, and now you want to marry her again? No, by Allah, she will never return to you!" This was an expected reaction.
The man who divorced her was not a bad person, and the woman wanted to return to him. Allah the Merciful knew their need for each other, so He revealed: "And when you divorce women and they fulfill their term, do not prevent them from marrying their [former] husbands if they agree among themselves in a proper manner. That is an admonition for he who believes in Allah and the Last Day. That is better for you and purer. And Allah knows, and you know not" [Al-Baqarah 2:232].
What did Ma'qil ibn Yasar do when he heard this verse? He said, "Now I will do it, O Messenger of Allah." The narrator said, "He left his anger and submitted to the command of Allah," meaning complete submission, so he married his sister to the man. In a narration outside of Al-Bukhari, it is reported that Ma'qil ibn Yasar said, "I submit to the command of my Lord, even if it goes against my nose," meaning he submitted even if it was as difficult as rubbing his nose in the dirt.
Comparison and Drawing Lessons
If this situation were to happen to some of us today, and a relative came to marry your daughter after divorcing her, you might say, "Never, I swear I will not marry her to you, and my word does not go back on itself!" Ma'qil ibn Yasar says: not only does my word not go back on itself, but my nose goes to the ground, as the matter is a command from Allah the Almighty.
