You Did Not Become Light to God
A word needed by our afflicted brothers to cut off the path of the devil to their hearts
A word needed by our afflicted brothers to cut off the path of the devil to their hearts
Brothers and sisters in the earthquake-stricken areas, peace be upon you and God's mercy. I was overjoyed to learn that our words reach you and comfort you. Even if we do not have the honor of healing your physical wounds, we can at least contribute to healing your souls and encouraging patience until we meet our Lord, the Most High.
Dear beloved, I know that the hardest thing for the afflicted is to feel that they are insignificant to others, that they are forgotten, that "no one cares." Their pain is eased when they remember that God is with them, but what if they feel insignificant even to God, not just to people?
Perhaps you think that if you had a special status with God, He would not have afflicted you with such a great trial. Or perhaps one of you might say to himself, "I am but one among thousands who have been afflicted," feeling lost among these thousands and not sensing a special connection between himself and God, the Almighty.
No, dear people, I want to tell you: you are not insignificant to God. Is it reasonable to think that I am insignificant to God when He has decreed that my house be destroyed and that I lose some of my family members who have passed away in a painful manner? No, trials do not mean insignificance to God. Rather, if accompanied by contentment, they are a sign of God's love; as our Prophet, peace be upon him, said: "The greater the reward, the greater the trial. And when Allah loves a people, He tests them. So whoever is content, for him is contentment."
Do not say, "I am insignificant to God, and now I have become a poor, dusty person with torn clothes and no shelter?" No, God does not look at your appearances or your wealth, but He looks at your hearts and your deeds. How beautiful are your hearts, your words, and your deeds, which drip with contentment and certainty! By this, you are more honorable and of greater worth to God than many of those who possess millions and live in safe lands. Our Prophet, peace be upon him, said: "And indeed, Allah gives the world to whom He loves and to whom He does not love, but He gives faith only to whom He loves."
The disbelievers thought that God had forsaken His Prophet when Gabriel ceased to come to him for a time, and they said, "He has abandoned Muhammad." But God revealed: "By the forenoon, and by the night when it is still, your Lord has not forsaken you, nor has He detested you." So do not think that you are insignificant to God, nor that He has forsaken you or detested you.
And those of you who have died in the collapse as believers, this is a selection. God says: "And that Allah may know those who believe and may take from you martyrs." "And may take from you" means He selects and chooses. We have also mentioned that death in the collapse is martyrdom.
None of you are lost. You are under the hearing and sight of God. You worship a Great Lord who is not distracted from one afflicted person by another. Each one of you has a complete and special relationship with God, the Most High. You can deal with God as if you are alone, with no one else from these thousands affected by the earthquake sharing with you. God says: "Your creation and your resurrection are but as a single soul. Indeed, Allah is Hearing and Seeing."
This means that God hears your words and sees your deeds, just as He hears and sees a single soul. He does not differentiate between them in the sight of the Lord of the worlds. You will not be lost in the crowd. You will not be lost among these thousands. Each one of you will see the effects of God's mercy, care, response, and support for him, and God's kindness towards his good words and deeds, as if he were alone in this universe, with no one else sharing it with him, neither human nor jinn.
The believers were not insignificant to God when they were burned alive, and God described them in Surah Al-Buruj. Nor were the Companions insignificant to God when they died in the plague of Amwas. Nor were the magicians insignificant after they believed when Pharaoh punished them. Nor were the seventy of the best Companions insignificant when they were killed treacherously in the Well of Ma'unah.
Indeed, God asks His angels, and He is the Most Knowing: "Have you taken the child of My servant?" The angels say, "Yes." He says, "Have you taken the fruit of his heart?" They say, "Yes." He says, "What did My servant say?" They say, "He praised You and returned to You."
Why does God ask them when He is the Most Knowing? I think that among God's wisdom in this is to show this kindness, care, and divine honor; God boasts to His angels about some of His believing servants. And I think that God boasts about the patient among you and celebrates your words, deeds, and heart's deeds in the highest assembly greater than how the people of this world celebrate the believers.
How do you think you are insignificant to God when you are now giving lessons of faith and certainty to people around the world? Your stances will remain preserved through the generations. How are you insignificant to God when we see in you the embodiment of our Prophet's, peace be upon him, words in the authentic hadith? By you, the patient, God establishes the proof against people that the greatness of faith and certainty is ongoing and has not ceased. You set examples that remind us of the Companions, may God be pleased with them.
What if one of us was negligent with God before the earthquake? If you were negligent and the earthquake brought you closer to God, then you are also among those who are honored and cherished, and you are not insignificant to God. In the hadith narrated by Al-Bukhari and Muslim, our beloved Prophet, peace be upon him, said: "God says: I am as My servant thinks of Me, and I am with him when he remembers Me. If he comes to Me walking, I come to him running." So he who was negligent among you and this affliction brought him closer to God, God accepts him and draws even closer to him. And since God has given you a second chance and has not taken you while you were sinning, and then granted you patience and contentment, this means that He, the Most High, wants good for you.
You are not insignificant to God. He has not forgotten you nor neglected you. And if some people have ceased to follow your affliction, sympathize with you, and deliver aid to you, you are still under the hearing and sight of God, who sees your stances and the deeds of your hearts. "And that man will not be given except what he strives for. And that his striving will soon be seen. Then he will be recompensed with the fullest recompense."
You are not insignificant to God. Look at how God comforts those who are afflicted like you. He says, out of mercy and compassion, showing His wisdom: "And do not be weak and do not grieve, and you are the uppermost if you are believers. If a wound should touch you - there has already touched the people a wound the like of it. And we alternate these days among the people that Allah may know those who believe and may take from you martyrs. And Allah does not like the wrongdoers. And that Allah may purify those who believe and destroy the disbelievers. Or do you think that you will enter Paradise while Allah has not yet made it clear which of you have striven and which of you are the patient?"
Brothers, Paradise is precious. "Verily, the merchandise of Allah is precious. Verily, the merchandise of Allah is Paradise." Paradise is precious; eternal life without interruption, without sorrow, without pain, without hunger, without thirst, without cold, eternal bliss. Its price is not easy.
I ask God to increase your reward, to strengthen your resolve, to make you leaders and heirs, and to help us support you in every way we can, O our people and beloved. And peace be upon you and God's mercy.
